Are you ready to rock your small group instruction with Phonics Readers for Beginners?
It’s so important to have a system in place that works when you are teaching phonetic skills. Using the Phonics Readers Bundle will give your beginning readers the confidence and support they need as they work towards becoming independent readers. Phonics Readers allow your students to gain sufficient practice reading in context with the target sounds.
As you are guiding students into becoming independent readers, it is important to be strategic with your instruction. Teaching the sounds explicitly and in a systematic way helps with consistency and is effective for fluency and mastery.
These readers are best utilized during small group instruction. Follow a sequence by starting with the CVC Word Family Readers . CVC words are three letter words that follow a pattern of consonant, vowel and then another consonant at the end. Prior to reading, preview the words that will be shown in the text. Review how to isolate and combine each letter sound. Model how the text should be read and observe students.
Be sure to grab the set of CVC Word Family Words you see in this post for free by entering your name in the link below. Print on colorful card-stock, cut them out and prep them for your lessons with the Phonics Readers.
During the lesson, remind students of the strategies they have learned in decoding the words. It’s important to re-read the same text at least two more times throughout the week. During your second and third time reading, check for comprehension by guiding students into a discussion of the text. Monitor those students who are doing really well and those who may be lagging behind and need additional support.
Have students make connections with the text and their own experiences so they can better comprehend. You can also send home with students after they have completed a reader.
