NOTE: These take a bit of time to put together if you are prepping the mats for centers. You may want to have one really helpful student help you cut or add the Velcro dots to save time.

Each mat has 6 words to choose from. Not every mat will have all 6 words used. Some mats will use only 5 or 4 words; therefore, you will have extra pieces. Toss those if you are using the black and white outlines, or leave them on the mats if you are using the actual mats. It is created that way, so students are challenged to chose the correct word and to really think about the sentences. Not all the mats are stories that flow; some will be simple sentences that are not related to each other.

While this phonics tool was specifically created for first grade, I have seen purchases for kindergarten and grades above first. After school teachers have also been able to use the phonics mats for their programs. You are practicing fluency, decoding, comprehension, and phonics all in one.

It’s best to introduce and model how to do the activities before sending students to work on them independently.It is best to do the ones with pictures first then send them off with the mats to centers for practice to mastery. These phonics mats are made to be practice in addition to what you are already teaching or have already taught. They should only be used independently after you already have taught the skills and use. These phonics mats are perfect for first grade. Not all words will be cvc. Please note that new vocabulary will be introduced within the phonics mats in addition to the sound being practiced. These phonics mats are for reading fluency practice. Please take a careful look at the preview and see if these will be too easy, too difficult, or just right for your students. These phonics mats are also self storage mats, so no searching for the pieces–they are stored right on the mats!
