There’s never a dull moment in first grade when your centers are fun and engaging. It’s great to switch up your center activities from time to time and incorporate effective review activities . I love these code word activities that are also teaching digraphs and beginning sounds. Your kiddos will love them too. Giving students enough opportunity to learn and revisit lessons throughout the year is so important, and this is just one of the fun ways that you can do it.
As always, explicitly teach the phonetic sounds before providing this type of activity for students. Doing a shared activity is always easy and effective. Get your anchor chart paper and have students call out words with the beginning and ending digraph.
Add the Flip and Read digraph activities when it’s time to go to stations. If you teach kindergarten, then the word family Flip and Read pack is just for you ! First, be sure to print the code word page as well as the picture card page for each digraph. Have students cut out all their pictures first and sort.
Break the code by using the beginning sound for each word. Write the word in the box .Find the picture that matches that word and paste it in the correct box. Make sure that students only paste the top part of the picture in the space so that they can flip it up and review the word underneath.
Paste and reveal. After modeling this activity the first time for students, they should be able to do it independently. A great brain break activity which reviews beginning sounds and phonemes.
The last step is to color your pictures. Send this activity home for review.
