Every parent in your classroom needs to hear from you. There are a plethora of ways to keep the lines of communication open in addition to calling home. One way to communicate with parents is to use a notebook that goes back and forth from school. Parents can leave a note for teachers to reply and vice versa. Don’t forget to put the date each time you reply or start a new conversation in your communication notebook.

Another way to communicate is to keep a communication log with the time and date you called a parent. Set a goal with the amount of times you will intentionally reach out to parents. Be sure to include praise reports as well as things that may need improvement. Digital communication is also effective. Many school districts use communication apps as well as classroom websites to share information.

Newsletters also keep parents abreast of what students are learning weekly. If your school has school planners, you can also use those to communicate with parents. If your school does not have school planners, and you would like to use planners for your students this year, check out this post on the editable school planners available to you.

COMMUNICATION LOGS

Adding a few communication pages to student folders will help to keep you on track and serves as a reminder to write a quick note home about whatever. Of course, if a more important conversation needs to be had, those would happen over the phone or in person.

How Do They Work?

It’s super easy using the communication logs. At the beginning of the year it gets really busy, so prepping several pages for each student homework folder is going to be your best bet. It’s a great idea to do this over the summer break if you can. During the first week of school, send a welcome note home letting parents know that you are looking forward to having their student in your classroom and building a partnership with them.

Also let them know that they can use these pages to communicate back and forth with you for simple things such as a change in how students are getting home, or if students are being picked up early. While the methods of school-home communication has evolved, the message is still the same. Effective, constructive communication between parent and teacher is necessary and beneficial for students and school-family partnerships.
